The Norman Conquest

William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy invaded England in 1066 and changed  our history thereby. He also changed the history of the world significantly. He was a capable leader and a capable warrior who brought over thousands of men. They saw what he saw, a country worth having. He would have seen it in mercenary terms. Did he speak English? No. Did he care for England and Englishmen save as a source of revenue? No. Nor did his followers. He followed up his victory at Hastings with the Harrying of the North. He was a murderous rogue. The Barnes Review explains The Normans - Blessing or Curse?

He it was who had the Domesday Book made. It was the first census, a very high tech idea in a day when very few men could read. It was a taxing measure so there is no doubt about his motivation. He probably thought himself as the Duke of Normandy rather than the King of England.

It may be that the Jews suggested invading England to enrich himself. It may be that they financed his operations. I have little evidence on these points, but see The Invasion of Ireland, so they are just speculation based on a view of the Jewish character. What is certain however that William brought them over from northern France and used them as tax collectors while they used another chance to get rich.

The Jews in Medieval Normandy: A Social and Intellectual History
This covers the ground. Perhaps it spreads light on the period but be aware that it was written by a Jew, one Norman Golb  whose son is a convicted liar.

History of the Jews in England (1066-1200)
Is from the WIKIPEDIA which is prone to its own private agenda. It tells us that Jews first came to England in order to export English slaves to Rome and that William brought them over as tax collectors. It is well known that the Domesday Book was written a bit later in 1086 as a tax collecting device. In its day it was high technology and a device for screwing England. The idea of using coin rather than kind was also a tax collecting device.

QUOTE
According to William of Malmesbury, William the Conqueror brought certain Jews from Rouen to London about 1070; and there is no evidence of their earlier existence in England.......... The earliest reference to a collective Jewish settlement is in the "Terrier of St. Paul's," of about 1115, where mention is made of some land in the "Jew street," which from its description corresponds to a part of Old Jewry. In 1130 the Jews of London incurred a fine of £2,000—an enormous sum in those days—"for the sick man whom they killed "; possibly some charge of magic was involved. Among the persons paying this fine was "Rubi Gotsce" (Rabbi Josce or Joseph), whose sons Isaac and Abraham were the chief members of the London community toward the end of the century, and whose house in Rouen was in possession of the family as late as 1203 ("Rot. Cart." 105b). In 1158 Abraham ibn Ezra visited London and wrote there his letter on the Sabbath and his "Yesod Mora." Up to 1177 London was so far the principal seat of Jews in England that Jews dying in any part of the country had to be buried in the capital, probably in the cemetery known afterwards as "Jewin Garden," and now as "Jewin street." The expulsion of the Jews from the Isle of France in 1182 brought about a large acquisition to the London community, which was probably then visited by Judah Sir Leon, whose name occurs as "Leo le Blund" in a list of London Jews who contributed to the Saladin tithe Dec., 1185. This list includes Jews from Paris, Joigny, Pontoise, Estampes, Spain, and Morocco.

Massacre of 1189.
The massacre of the Jews at the coronation of Richard I. Sept. 3, 1189 (see England), was the first proof that the Jews of England had of any popular ill-will against them. [ Believe that if you want - Editor ] Richard did practically nothing to punish the rioters, though he granted a special form of charter to Isaac fil Joce, the chief London Jew of the time, "and his men," which is the earliest extant charter of English Jews. In 1194 the Jews of London contributed £486 9s. 7d. out of £1,803 7s. 7d. toward the ransom of the king: in the list of contributors three Jewish "bishops" are mentioned—Deulesalt, Vives, and Abraham. In the same year was passed the "Ordinance of the Jewry," which in a measure made London the center of the English Jewry for treasury purposes, Westminster becoming the seat of the Exchequer of the Jews, which was fully organized by the beginning of the thirteenth century. Meanwhile anti-Jewish feeling in London had spread to such an extent that King John found it necessary in 1204 to rebuke the mayor for its existence.

Infiltration Of Jews Into England ex Wiki - circa 1655
Cromwell saw commercial advantage in directing trade to London rather than Amsterdam so he connived with various traders from Amsterdam and that meant Jews, in particular  Menasseh Ben Israel. By the same token the Jews saw advantages to operating in London.

Lawyers didn't mind them but church men and merchants did not want them. Cromwell did. Permission was informally granted around 1655 to come over provided they did not make themselves a nuisance. They then started worming their way in and gaining influence. Some crypto-Jews pretended to be Spanish but had to declare themselves when we went to war with Spain.

King Charles II came back and was  not against them because they helped him. That was why they helped him. Two such were Mendes da Costa and Augustine Coronel-Chacon [ Jews both ]. The merchants of London objected but failed to get rid of them.

King  William III came to England from Holland in 1689 and did not stop Jewish merchants being taxed as aliens even though he had had a loan of 2,000,000 gulden [ Dutch guilders ]  from Antonio Lopez Suasso. His arrival helped to make London rather than Amsterdam the predominant centre of European finance. All of the major Jewish financiers had their men in London. This means  Mendez da Costas, Abudientes, Salvadors, Lopezes, Fonsecas, and Seixas.

In 1745 the Jews backed the right horse, to wit His Majesty's Government which helped. They managed to get into Parliament later and d'Israeli even became Her Majesty's Prime Minister. He converted to Christianity first though. This is a fairly standard procedure for them when it is convenient. They can stop pretending later when circumstances change.

STALIN’S WILLING EXECUTIONERS - JEWS AS A HOSTILE ELITE IN THE USSR
Kevin McDonald's review tells us en passant that Englishmen paid King Edward I the huge sum of £116,346 in return for expelling two thousand Jews in 1290. His quoted source is  Mundill 1998, 249ff. - presumably from England's Jewish Solution : Experiment and Expulsion, 1262-1290 (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought: Fourth Series) (Paperback) by Robin R. Mundill. His book tells us that the Jewish Exchequer was referred to as an Engine of Extortion. His attitude to the fact is downright hostility. See by searching his thesis, RobinMundillPhDThesis.pdf.
