Cyprus Rally

The Cyprus Rally 2011 is run by the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. This year it was based in Paphos on the southwest coast of Cyprus. It may be a rally but it looks very much like a race. The cars are highly developed. The tubular frame inside carries the stresses, which is why it is solidly connected to the suspension and engine. They use racing fuel rather than petrol. It should be clear that after all of this work they go fast over smooth roads and bad. The final results are at http://irc-results.com/2011/cyprus-rally-2011/. An overview is at 2011_Cyprus_Rally. The next one is Cyprus Rally 2012.

The camera feeds pictures to a transmitter which sends them on up to a helicopter, thence to the television networks. It makes good viewing. That rather the point; it is entertainment for the somnolent peasant masses. Panem et circenses = Bread and circuses

The base area for a couple of days. It was a way station during the Crusades.

Skoda on the outside, An extensive rebuild inside.

The suspension is from Geiger Racing.

The driver has navigation aids but not much luxury.

Coming into the pit area.

Another Skoda. Another art job.

A mechanic working against the clock.

These cars are different from the normal town car. They are designed to withstand high stresses.

The suspensions are different for the same reason. They come from Geiger Racing

The helicopter comes in; the video recordings are rushed away.

There is nothing ordinary about these cars.

This is the Super Special Stage round the town hall. It had the benefit of a speech made by the Mayor. Girls danced too.
