Financing Political Operations

A Jew, the sort who understands money told us that charities do not want, or should that be need capital? They need income. It true for political operations too. This article gives some pointers in particular two sources; The Millionaire Mind & The Relentlessly Practical Guide to Raising Serious Money. If we are poor there are reasons.

Where Is The Money?
A reoccurring frustration in the post-war Movement has been lack of money, oftentimes perceived as resulting from the parsimoniousness of our financially well-off kinsmen. Despite the most heart-rending appeals, it seems most of these folks just don’t want to ante up. Yes, we have had and continue to have some generous donors, but not nearly what is the norm experienced by sundry other efforts, the $PLC being a good example [ of results as distinct from morals - Editor ].

There are quite a few theories about the anomaly whereby Aryans will donate to various causes dedicated to fighting diseases, caring for abused animals, or helping ‘victims’ of poverty — yet at the same time blanch at assisting efforts directed to the continuance of their own kind on this planet. Some think it stems from our altruistic, yet universally moralistic nature. Some blame it on our evolution as an individualistic hunter/gatherer people; some blame it on Christianity, and some blame the Jews.

Yet none of these scapegoats really answer the question as to why our well-heeled kinfolk — for the most part — do not donate to White Nationalist (WN) activities regularly and generously. There is a reason, of course, and as is the case with everything else we have fallen short in, it is because it involves something we do not want to hear and do not wish to face.

It may come as a surprise that many — perhaps a majority — of wealthy White couples (even those who lean to the Left) are very much racially conscious.  Don’t let the Jewish-controlled media lead you to believe otherwise. The fact that most well-off Whites are that way makes sense when you think about it. People may become wealthy by gambling or by inheritance, but those types usually do not remain that way. Generally speaking, White people who become wealthy and retain that wealth do so because they have, to a large degree, values that coincide with the laws of nature, and because of this, they see value in the White race. They know which race was and is the primary builder of civilization. They know who makes the best neighbors. They know from which race the greatest inventors and innovators came. They know which race it is safest to live with. They know which race can be most relied on for partnering in business ventures. And, they know which race will provide the best wives and husbands for their sons and daughters.

But they also see little that is attractive in the various WN organizations. More specifically, the various WN groups that have come and gone through the years have not come across as family-friendly, disciplined, well-organized, professional or reliable — traits typical White millionaires value in themselves and look for in others before deciding to collaborate with them.

In this essay we will not focus on the billionaires or high-end millionaires, but rather that overlooked group—those who started from scratch and by dint of effort and perhaps a dollop of good luck have a net worth in the range of one to twenty or so million dollars. These are the ones who can be depended on for steady monthly donations of several hundred to several thousand dollars. Proceeding from the observation that we have overlooked this group because we don’t know what they look like and therefore where to look, we will briefly study just what type of people these millionaires are, and touch on methods for approaching them as well as for retaining their financial support. And, we will cite a few real-life examples where various WN organizations have ‘dropped the ball’ when dealing with wealthy potential donors.

The examples I will cite are either from our family’s experience, or from others we know personally whose interactions with various WN people and organizations has been less than favorable. All examples occurred in the last fifteen years, and all the organizations involved were — to all appearances — comprised of reputable people and professionally run. I will mention no names or organizations (excepting one good Aryan who crossed the divide a half decade ago). It is not my desire to embarrass any of my kinfolk. It is a rule I live by and that I encourage others to embrace that — until this fight is over and the Enemy is back where he belongs — we speak no ill of otherwise sincere WNs in public forums. No matter how much we are repelled by them, no matter what they have done. If we have a complaint, we can hash it out in private or avoid the person henceforth.

And, I would also appreciate that those reading this would refrain from open speculation by way of comment. If you are wrong in your guessing you have done someone and/or their organization a very great disservice. And, even if you are right, there is no way to prove it. In any event, all those involved — for better or worse — are our kinsmen, and I wish them my very best, and hope you do too!

Let’s first take a look at the ‘typical’ millionaire. (Note: by ‘millionaire’ we mean those whose net realizable value exceeds one million dollars, or in other words, a balance sheet millionaire. We do not mean those whose annual income is a million dollars or more, many of whom are not millionaires and not a few of whom are very good at blowing every penny they make). Being a firm believer in ‘doing what you do best and hiring the rest,’ I’ll defer to an expert in this field, Thomas J. Stanley, Ph.D. — specifically one of his books on the subject entitled The Millionaire Mind. In his excellent, well-researched writing he cites the following attributes of the typical millionaire (as noted in his cited attributes, most are males):

OK, this gives us an idea of what the typical millionaire looks like — pretty much a decent sort of person who is somewhat rare nowadays, although not untypical in most respects to the average White male up through the early 1950s. Let’s stop for a minute and ponder on the fact that birds of a feather flock together. Hence, those who are successful will seek rapport and endeavor to support those with like-minded attitudes and similar values. With that in mind, ask yourself this: how many WN leaders of note — past or present — dovetail with the aforementioned attributes?

Now that we know what type of person is most likely to fit the millionaire profile, our next question is how to get him or her to donate to our cause. Again, I’ll defer to an expert in the field of fundraising, David Lansdowne, who in his book, The Relentlessly Practical Guide to Raising Serious Money, notes the following as of major importance in successful fundraising:

I’d like those of you who have either donated to one or more WN activities or solicited donations for such pause for a moment and think, how many (if any) of the aforementioned attributes did you experience as a donor or utilize as a solicitor?

To generously fund our various WN activities we must take into account both the profile of the typical millionaire and proven fundraising techniques. I’d like to share some personal experiences as well as those of others I know to show how important this is.

The first area in which WN has fallen short is also the simplest — something that every Mother taught (or at least should have taught) her kids, and that is to say “thank you.” Donors like to know their gifts are appreciated, and expressions of gratitude go a long way to encouraging continued giving. For example, my wife and I donate regularly to a number of animal rights and nature conservancy groups. Always we receive a prompt written note of thanks, acknowledging the date and amount of receipt, as well as any specific designation the bequest was made for.

Now, much of this is to comply with IRS rules. But, these organizations also will give small tokens of appreciation — a backpack, a mug, a pen, an embossed certificate of appreciation, a thermos, a stuffed animal, etc. Such items are of course not required by the IRS, yet go a long way to building good relationships with donors. Regardless, donors do not always insist on a tax-deductibility feature; a truly generous donor recognizes the truth that giving primarily to save on taxes is no gift at all, but rather a purchase. They give because they like to give — it makes them feel good, and they let their CPA worry about the taxes.

Our personal experience over the years with various WN organizations has usually (but not always) been that they will gratefully acknowledge the initial gift, but remain silent thereafter even when the accumulated donations (we always donate monthly) run into the thousands of dollars. This is very discouraging and does little to foster goodwill. We even had one organization admonish us after we had discontinued giving (for various reasons); their letter never acknowledged the many thousands we had given over the years but rather stated our calling was that of a sustainer, and the tone of the letter was much like what one might get from a utility company after being several months delinquent in payment.

Another variant of WN ingratitude we have found extremely strange is to be doing one’s monthly bank reconciliation, only to discover a check sent to a WN organization a month or better before is still outstanding. We have had this happen with two different WN organizations, with checks ranging in amounts of $200 to $500 remaining outstanding up to three months before they cleared our bank. I called one of them to ask what the problem was, only to have the recipient give a sort of awkward giggle and assure us it would not happen again (which it did). The other WN organization never responded to my emails — I finally put a stop payment on the checks.

I can’t figure this out, but I will say this: I cannot begin to tell you what it feels like to have given cheerfully, only to find the recipient hasn’t even bothered to deposit the check. It’s like they are saying we really didn’t need your money, and furthermore you are not even important enough to waste our time with an acknowledgement of thanks.

Currently we give to two WN organizations. With one we are in regular correspondence and they thank us regularly; the other now thanks us rarely but at least our checks clear more or less promptly and we think their mission important enough to continue our monthly funding.

WN ingratitude is troubling, indicative of a deeper White problem. But this is not to say all ingrates are WN — we recently gave eight White married couples we do business with gift certificates for a nice dinner at a Scandinavian restaurant that opened in our area and that we wished to help promote; none of them are what I would call racially conscious, and only one of them (a Mormon Bishop) called to thank us.

And by no means are all WN ingrates. David Lane thanked us profusely for money we sent him, and I still have (and treasure) one letter he sent me in his spidery scrawl (exacerbated by the extremely short, blunt pencils the Florence prisoners were/are obliged to use) where he detailed how he spent the money (mostly on postage, as he did a lot of correspondence).

I’ll close the subtopic of gratitude with something Aryans can learn from — a bit of Black History related by the aforementioned author David Lansdowne:

The story goes that when Booker T. Washington was soliciting funds for the Tuskegee Institute, he received in the mail one morning a crisp dollar bill from John D. Rockefeller. Others may have scoffed or been irate at this token gesture, but not Washington. He wrote and duly thanked Rockefeller… and he did more. At the end of the year he sent the tycoon a detailed accounting of what had been done with the dollar, penny by penny. Impressed, Rockefeller thereafter supported Washington’s work in earnest.

Looking at the typical attributes of millionaires, we see that most of them have a strong marriage, are family oriented, have integrity, discipline, courage, and many credit their courage with a strong religious faith. Many — perhaps most — White millionaires are Christian. While I am not Christian, I have many Christian friends, especially LDS and Nazarenes. I believe Christianity is a very good fit for many of our folk, and most of our best are in fact Christians. I judge people by their actions — good or bad — and not how they may be labeled by themselves or others. It’s like Glinda asked Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz: “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?” And so it is not a question of being Christian, or Pagan, or NS, etc.; rather, are you or I a good one or a bad one?

Some years ago I introduced a very wealthy and racially conscious Christian couple to a certain WN organization. They were impressed by the literature I gave them, but they were smart, too (smarter than me, anyway). They did a lot of background checking on the upper echelon of this organization, and I was amazed at the amount of personal information they garnered; they told me later that as they had been managing their substantial rental real estate holdings for many years they were very good on doing background checks. Well, their little investigation revealed a number of troubling attributes with every single person in the leadership cadre they checked out, ranging from numerous divorces, abandoned children, pedophilia, and alcohol abuse. Needless to say, they politely advised me they were not interested in financially supporting the organization in question. And, needless to say, I was embarrassed.

I had a similar experience with two clients — a husband and wife veterinarian team who are very wealthy, are self-proclaimed atheists, and have, I suspect, unbelievably high IQs (I mentioned them briefly in What Will Work — Part Three). They are also racially conscious, and again I encouraged them to check out a certain WN organization as it could really use their support. Well, they did, and it only took the discovery of a history of numerous failed marriages of one of the leaders to turn them off completely.

Folks, the point I’m making is this: whether we like it or not, successful people usually want to associate with other successful people. They want to associate with names and faces whose accomplishments they can be proud of in all known facets of their life, not just one. These are not stupid people — they realize human beings cannot be compartmentalized; you do not do business with someone “who is a great writer and organizer and is super-high IQ but who just happens to be a womanizer”. Successful people want to feel good about those they contribute to. They want to deal with people who are family-friendly, have a proven track record, and — most importantly — whose deeds match their words.

Another experience involved an organization we gave heavily to for some years. We finally decided to pay these folks a visit at their ‘headquarters’. One can only learn so much from correspondence, and much of that can be very misleading! We timed our visit to coincide with a meeting of this organization’s upper echelon, thinking ‘headquarters’ would try to put its best foot forward during a gathering of cadre. Such was not the case — litter and debris was to be found throughout the compound both indoors and outdoors, and utilities were not wholly functional. It was obvious this condition had existed for some time, and needless to say this state of affairs did nothing to encourage us to continue our support as it reflected a lack of discipline, professionalism and organization.

Many WN organizations have publications, usually issued on a quarterly basis. On two separate occasions we gave copies of one of these periodicals to two other racially conscious couples of substantial wealth to look over, encouraging them to subscribe to same. Both couples did, only to find (as we did as well) that the publications were not issued timely, and were not even quarterly but rather issued on a hit-and-miss haphazard schedule that turned out to be biannual or even annual (one finally dried up completely). Both couples attempted correspondence. One couple, after several letters, was advised that further publication was being hindered by “more pressing commitments”. The other couple never even received a response. Again, this resulted in embarrassment and discouragement on our part, while both of the other couples were left with a bad taste in their mouth, thereafter associating WN organizations in general with lack of discipline, honesty, good manners and professionalism.

What Will Work, Part 15: Where is the Money?—Installment 2

June 21, 2012
Farnham O'Reilly
We have a friend we refer to as our Irish Nature Girl. She is a widow in her 60s, highly intelligent, quite an animal lover, and an Irish immigrant. She does not quite fit the profile of the millionaires we are talking about as she inherited most of her wealth (although she has done very well in making it grow), and is at the upper end of the wealth continuum in that her portfolio is relatively large; her yearly interest income alone at current rates is around half a million from a fair bit of cash at home and abroad. She owns a lot of real estate as well, although she avoids the stock market (smart lady). The reason I mention all this is she obviously would be a good candidate for financially supporting, to a very handsome degree, a WN organization.

She noticed in a WN publication I gave her that they were soliciting articles. She wrote a fine article on the habits of predator animals, drawing some fascinating analogies to the plight of our own folk, and submitted it as per the WN organization’s instructions. Personally, I thought her article extremely well written — intriguing in fact — and told her I was sure the WN organization would like it. I should mention too that up to this point she had not donated anything to this particular (or any other) WN organization but was seriously considering doing so. After all, we all want to feel good about ourselves, and she thought she could be doing a good thing for her culture by writing articles now and then and donating money as well.

About a month and a half went by without response from the WN organization. She emailed them again, but still no response. She was a little upset, asking me “Why does Mr. (X) not contact me? I followed their instructions as they requested, but have heard nothing!” I finally took it upon myself to phone the intended recipient, who told me in an exasperated tone, “I get hundreds of emails every day and don’t have time to answer them all.” I said, “You shouldn’t solicit correspondence if you do not intend to correspond.” He responded, “Well, it’s just one letter anyway.” I replied, “You just kissed off an endowment that would have put the (name of the organization) light years ahead”. And indeed he had; when I relayed the conversation to our friend, she completely wiped her feet of involvement with WN people (although we remain good friends with her); her generosity is now pretty much directed to a number of animal rights and nature conservancy groups. Again we see a lack of discipline, personal responsibility, good manners and professionalism in the WN circles.

One experience my wife and I had was extremely troubling. I had begun correspondence with a gentleman who espoused many of the same aspirations I have with respect to our folk. Everything sounded good — in our snail mail correspondence and via email. And, while I had asked several other WN leaders what they thought of him and received very negative endorsements, I discounted such warnings partly because I like to make my own decisions and partly because there has always been, unfortunately, a tremendous amount of puerile sibling rivalry amongst many (but not all) WN leaders.

We began donating money to this person, but, following an earlier negative experience with another WN organization, we felt we better meet this chap face to face before proceeding any further in our collaborative efforts. So, we offered to come meet him, but after brief correspondence we decided it would be better for him to come out to visit us. We sent him money for his travel expenses (airline ticket, car rental and motel) and awaited developments.

At the appointed time he showed up at our office. The first thing I found disquietingly strange was that he wore very dark sunglasses, even though we were indoors. Now, I like looking into a person’s eyes — I can read a lot there — and it bothers me when I cannot do that. The man more or less ignored my wife, then immediately gave me something he had written — a story of sorts — with a little one page caveat tucked in the front cover to the effect that there was a passage in it some might find offensive, but that he felt obligated to include in order to make the writing more ‘mainstream’. All this happened within the first 60 seconds of meeting him.

I thought, well, who knows, it’s probably something a little off-color, but I’ll read it since I liked everything else he wrote although some of his essays were, in my opinion, unnecessarily blemished with coarse or obscene language.

We met for two days and I did not have a chance to read his little story until he had left. When I began reading it, I came across the passage he must have been talking about (I never finished reading the whole thing). It was the most bizarre, egregious pornographic filth I could imagine. His material went into the wood cook stove, and a letter went to him severing our collaborative efforts. And, another lesson learned — to beware of internet contacts — you do not and cannot know who or what is on the other end.

Unbelievable! What kind of person gives a married couple something like that — and as a gift? But, this, in hindsight, rounded out our experience with most WN folks we have donated to — porn lovers, ingrates, inflated egos, lack of professionalism, family-unfriendly, narcissistic, lack of communication (the mailbox of the customer you are trying to reach is full…), disorganized, lack of good manners, ad nauseam.

Hopefully the foregoing helps to illustrate the reasons why WN organizations have fallen short in the area of finance. We have failed to understand the mind of the millionaire, that he or she is family oriented, is organized, values integrity, discipline and courage and expects the same from those he or she donates to. And, we have failed in the most basic rules in successful fundraising, that generosity should be rewarded with a prompt expression of gratitude, that past donors should be nurtured, and that the very best leaders who bring warmth and confidence to a cause should be the ones who solicit funds.

If I were to point to the origin (as opposed to the cause — not really one and the same) of the Movement’s financial woes, I would attribute it to the post-war destruction of the Aryan family unit. None of the WN organizations — past or present — can be credibly viewed as family sanctuaries. None of them seriously espoused the value of a strong marriage and the importance in investing time and energy in raising children. None of them seriously warned of the deadly peril of allowing the Levantine stranger into their home to influence their family; i.e. — television. None of them seriously warned of the long-term consequences in abdicating their children’s education to government schools rather than homeschooling. It has been said that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, and while the importance of family life has been given priority by the Jews, Hispanics and Asians, it has been all but ignored — with possibly fatal consequences — by Aryans.

Some will tender the excuse that Aryan advocacy is hard on marriage. Don’t buy it — it is the unwholesome things of this world that threaten a marriage; sincere Aryan advocacy is one of the most loving and wholesome pursuits a married couple can engage in. Over the years, my wife and I have been very open about our WN beliefs with friends, relatives, a few enemies, and business associates. It has had no effect on our marriage, and we know other WN couples who can say the same.

There is a very, very good reason the Enemy has attacked the Aryan family unit. For us Aryans, the family unit is the polar nucleus of our survival — it is the only level we can survive at. Other peoples may dwell and even prosper within frameworks of extended families, gangs, ghettoes, matriarchal groups, societies, and cultures. Not us — our critical level of organization — for purposes of continuance on this planet — begins and ends with the traditional family unit — one man, one woman, and their children.

On the positive side, there is great opportunity — with assuredly triumphal consequences — should even a pivotal portion of the WN community turn from evil and embrace those tasks and duties that will result in Nature’s blessings accruing from strong Aryan family units. If we embrace Nature’s Laws and raise strong sons and daughters, we will be happier, and we will forge a bond with those wealthy Aryans who now find themselves on an ever shrinking island assaulted by the stormy seas of degeneracy. Our healing must start soon, for the Enemy has increased the tempo in which he is assaulting marriage and the traditional family unit. Even his cherished saffron puppet currently defiling the once White House has now come public in supporting the most horrifically abominable redefinition of marriage known in human history.

The problem is not that Whites have no money, or that they are stingy, the problem is that Whites are no longer White. We need to focus on the illness, not the symptoms. We need to ask: why is there such degeneracy in much of the WN circles? Actually, things are improving in this area, with much of the newer WN leadership being comprised of men and women we can really be proud of. But to address the question, much of the post-war Movement has, until very recently, been comprised of those who, painfully conscious of their various character defects, sought refuge in the fantasy that their white skin and good looks could atone for their degenerate abdication of personal responsibility — their failed marriage, failing to raise their children properly or even at all, their booze and porn, wasting time on mindless video games, their financial irresponsibility, their chronic unemployment.

We forget that Nature clothes outwardly to reflect that which is within. She deals with peoples as a race, not as individuals. Within this framework, She does not house bums in mansions, She does not clothe cowardly, dysgenic spirits in attractive bodies. Likewise She glorifies goodness, and so in the far past when She saw our distant ancestors in their Hyperborean home reaching out to an ideal that was higher and more noble than themselves, She clothed them not in houses of coal or mud but in the fair countenance that is the birthright of the Noble Ones, the glory of Aryan man and woman.

But, Mother Nature is also just, and rewards evil in kind. And so as Her Aryan people turned from the high morals and values and ideals of times past and embraced the Anti-Nature road to death offered by the Evil Ones, She allowed the process of stripping us of our fair and noble countenance to begin — a process brought about through miscegenation, hedonism (e.g., not having children because they interfere with one’s personal freedom), aborting those children we were blessed with, or not cherishing and raising those children we were given. For She is loving and She is just, and just as She will raise to new heights of glory a people who turn from evil and obey Her Laws, so She will allow that same people who turn to those evils offered by an alien folk to perish, and their destruction will be great and their damnation will be of a magnitude never thought possible.

Being Aryan means being Nature’s elite. It means having a strong family, high morals, investing time with your spouse and your children, helping living animals, taking the dead ones off the side of road that their precious bodies will not be further desecrated, staying physically fit, protecting Nature, eating wholesome and natural food, and living simply. It is these Aryan values that shall form the polar nucleus for our future Republic, a Republic where all good Aryans with their divers religions may flourish and prosper.

And, being Aryan means being noble. You can be a Christian, a Pagan, an NS adherent, an agnostic, but first and foremost you must be you.  If you are noble, it matters not what religion you are. And, if you are ignoble, your religion means nothing; indeed, it suffers because of you.

What are you? Were you born into your religion, your profession, your nationality, your political affiliation, or your view of life? No, you were born — first and foremost — an Aryan. You were Aryan before you were Christian, before you were WN, before you were anything else. What is most important — to do or to be? The answer of course is to be, for the creation follows the creator, not the other way around. Be first an Aryan. Then be an Aryan with your spouse, and then with your children. That’s it, folks. That’s all it will take to secure victory, for you as an individual, and for us as a people.

The Jews, the Blacks, the Hispanics, the Muslims — none of these can harm us if our own house is in order. If our house is torn down, they become deadly enemies, and if our house is rebuilt strong and safe as it was in yesteryear, they will melt like snow in the March sun. This house is the Aryan family unit. The rebuilding is threefold and begins within — first atoning (making whole) the damage you have wrought on yourself — turn away from the alcohol, the pornography, the bad diets, the unhealthy lifestyle, the chronic unemployment (only the truly worthless should be in this category), the abdication of personal responsibility. Then atone for those evils wrought against your wife or former wife, for she was to be your girl, and you were to be her hero. So long as you are both alive, there is hope this can be done. And where you cannot atone, let them know I am sorry for the evil I have done. Finally, your children — if possible make whole where you have been remiss as a parent. They were to be the apple of your eye, your immortality, and you were to be their protector, their hero too. And if this is not possible, let them know too I am sorry for failing in my duty.

You and your wife together — physically destroy the home TV, homeschool if you can, and teach your little ones about Nature and Her lessons in personal responsibility. And, if possible, raise them to be a better Aryan than you have been. This is the graduate school of mortal life on Earth. For it is the will of the God, the Allfather of our forefathers, that creation shall go up, not down, that it shall achieve ever higher levels, even as it has in eons past.

If we survive, it will be because Aryan nobility survived. And, if we survive, we will be infinitely stronger, more vibrant, more moral, more ethnocentric, and the epitome of our various religious ideals. Indeed, we will be on the path to Godhood. But if we fail, it will be because we embraced Man’s goodness instead of Nature’s goodness — choosing Man’s Mantra of Equality over Nature’s Law of Quality — and our demise will stand for all time to come as a testimony to that death that awaits those who spit in God’s face; our damnation will be utterly complete.

Our problem is us, not the Jew. The Jew is weak in and of himself, for he is totally dependent on his White slaves performing outside their character. He has only the strength we give him. If we were to rise up as a single folk — Godly men and women — he would be forced back into his ghettoes, returning to his old strategies of forever changing his name and his habits as he sought parasitic nourishment from a people that would not give it to him. I do not believe this will happen, but I do believe the best of us will separate ourselves from the rest — both physically and spiritually — leaving the Enemy with a decaying rump host to feed on while we pursue a higher destiny in our new Republic, our new Hyperborean home where our precious children shall be lovingly raised in wholesome safety. There is such a thing as the armor of righteousness.

***

Spring is fading into summer here in the Homeland. Family gardens have been planted and the alfalfa fields have had their first cutting. The season for wild mushroom hunting is over now — dedicated mushroom hunters keep the locations of their morels and shaggymanes a family secret, although that does not keep the elk away, who have a sweet tooth for them as well. Correctly identifying wild mushrooms is a hobby you definitely want to be expert in, or at least do as my generous neighbor does — he calls me the next day after I’ve had some of his — to see how I’m feeling.

A little-known part of the Homeland generally not associated with the Pacific Northwest is the Owyhee desert, a vast expanse of desolate beauty located in SW Idaho and SE Oregon. Many parts of it can be accessed by motor vehicle, yet it’s still possible to reach spots where you can look forty miles or better in any direction, and have a reasonable assurance that you are the only human as far as the eye can see. If you really want solitude, the Owyhee desert is the place to go.

Owyhee River Canyon

Actually, when you include your animal friends, you are not alone. On various camping trips my wife and I have taken there, we have come in close proximity to pronghorn antelope, coyotes, burrowing owls, several subspecies of fox, eagles, badgers, deer, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, and a few rattlesnakes, who are content to leave us alone if we do likewise. Sometimes we will hike into one of the many canyons, and we always wear snake chaps (pronounced ‘shaps’ in rural Idaho) when doing so. At the bottom one can take a swim in the river; the water is marvelously clear and the trout are quite tame and will even come up and nibble on your toes while you relax along the sand banks. I don’t think the parts of the Owyhee River we visit have ever been fished — not surprising as it is a long, difficult and snaky (literally!) hike down and back.

When you really get out there in the middle of nowhere, the wild animals do not seem so wild; they betray in small ways both their unfamiliarity with humans, and an oddly innocent desire to get to know us better. In doing so, they give us a subtle yet thrilling glimpse of that wonderful world awaiting us when we as a race turn from evil and accept the love and laws of Mother Nature. Watching and talking to these beloved creatures, the words of my favorite childhood author, Thornton W. Burgess, come back to me — Preach the gospel of the oneness of all Nature and love for and humane treatment of the folk in fur and feathers.
