Politics In Yugoslavia

The Balkans have long been prone to instability. It was an assassination there that triggered off World War I. After World War II Yugoslavia was run by Josip Broz Tito, a successful guerrilla leader. Stalin was setting up his assassination which might have converted the Cold War into a hot war, into World War III.

Yugoslavia [ 1918 - 1992 ] was part of the USSR. At all events Joe Stalin saw it that way. Marshall Tito had different ideas.

Frederick Forsyth, a well known writer tells us about the place in his book, Avenger at Chapter 17. The whole area is one of vicious banditry but that Tito got a grip on the crime industry. He allowed them to do whatever they wanted as long as it was outside his country. It sounds like a good policy to me. After Tito departed this life things went back to normal, robbing, looting et cetera. The Americans decided to bomb it back into the Stone Age for some reason. They got away with it because they are the biggest bullies.

QUOTE
Iosif Romualdovich Grigulevich (Иосиф Ромуальдович Григулевич) (May 5, 1913 – June 2, 1988) was one of the most remarkable Soviet illegal operatives (a spy acting without legitimate diplomatic cover) during the 1930s and 1940s, when he took a leading role in assassinating leftists who were not loyal to Joseph Stalin. Under a false identity as Teodoro B. Castro, a wealthy Costa Rican expatriate living in Rome, Grigulevich served as the ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica to both Italy and Yugoslavia (1952–1954). His mission to assassinate Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito was aborted due to Stalin's death, after which Grigulevich settled in Moscow, where he worked as an expert on the history of Latin America and on the Roman Catholic Church. He was a member of Soviet Academy of Sciences, served as editor in chief of the magazine, Obshchestvennye nauki i sovremennost ("Social Sciences Today") and published many books and articles about Latin American subjects.
