Droit du Seigneur

From The Straight Dope

Droit du Seigneur is the French of it and jus primae noctis is the Latin. It has been a source of innocent amusement [ OK, forget the innocent ] for years. It even rates a mention in  The Marriage of Figaro, and various old histories refer to it.

Cecil, the man who knows everything says that it was just a rumour. Boring but true. However I saw the Charlton Heston film and he had his wicked way of her. Hollywood wouldn't lie to us, would it?
PS The Wikipedia has done an in depth analysis and it is not quite so sure as Cecil about it being mere rumour.
